Home hot tubs offer hours of personal pleasure. The warm, soothing water is perfect for relaxing and unwinding after a day’s work. Many people enjoy their hot tubs for the health benefits which include improved blood circulation and a reduction of stress. Hydrotherapy is often recommended by healthcare providers because of the heat, buoyancy of the water and the massaging action. These effects combine to stimulate a sense of well being, as muscles are gently touched by the swirling stimulation of the water. Stepping into a hot tub is truly an affordable taste of luxury for every home.

To keep your hot tub working efficiently, a hot tub filter is necessary. Basically, a filter will trap any debris that falls into the water. This often includes hair, but depending on where your hot tub is located, the filter can also pick up leaves from a nearby tree, dirt particles or even bits of food dropped after a snack. The proper filter will make getting into your hot tub a delight, since the water will be clear, clean and inviting.

Filters come in many sizes and shapes, but there will be only one that fits your particular model. Check the owner’s manual to determine the exact type of filter. Prices of filters vary considerably, and can range anywhere from under $20 to more than $100. The price depends on the model that fits your hot tub. Many local retailers and online suppliers carry these filters. Shop around for the best price.

Generally, hot tub filters should be replaced after one year. A filter that is dirty or no longer operates can pose health risks, since the water cannot be cleaned properly. Additionally, a worn out filter can damage other components on the hot tub and can even void the warranty.

To keep the filter working efficiently, regular inspect and clean it. Before inspecting the filter, make sure that the power to the hot tub is off. Consult with the manual to locate and remove the filter. Once the filter is removed, spray it with a high pressure hose attachment or a small power washer. You will notice dirt and debris that has accumulated between the fins, and this must all be removed. This simple washing of the filter can make it run longer and work more powerfully.

At no time should certain solvents be used when cleaning the filter. These include laundry detergent, dishwashing soap or car wash products. These chemicals are harmful to the filter and may damage it.

If the filter is unusually dirty or is resistant to the power washing, there are chemicals that may be used. A spa filter cleaner is available at hot tub dealers. This product requires the filter to soak overnight in the solution or you can spray the mixture on the filter and wash it off after 15 minutes. The method you choose will depend on how dirty the filter is and how quickly you want the hot tub operational again. Muratic acid or chlorine can also be diluted and used as a cleaning solution for the filter.

Keeping the filter on your hot tub dirt free is the single most important maintenance  procedure you can do. Most malfunctions of hot tubs can be attributed to a faulty or unclean filter. A well maintained filter will increase your enjoyment and use of your personal hot tub.
